Give your outdoor unit some shade
An outdoor unit in the afternoon sun works harder. A little shade helps, if it can still breathe.
Shade on the unit can make it a little more efficient, but airflow matters more than shade.
Keep two feet clear
Plants, screens and walls should stay at least two feet from the sides, and nothing should sit on top: the fan blows hot air out of the top.
